Graco Husky AODD pumps are designed to handle a wide range of chemicals, flow rates and viscosities, making them a reliable choice for various industries. But how do you choose the best pump for your specific applications? Graco’s Air-Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) Husky pumps come in metal and plastic housings, with different take balls, seat, and diaphragms of various materials, and offer a variety of flow rates and sizes. choosing Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump requires answering key questions about your application. As the authorized distributor of Graco Husky pumps in Saudi Arabia, AEMCO provides expert guidance to help you choose the ideal pump for your requirements. Here is what you need to consider.
An Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pump is a versatile and efficient pump powered by compressed air instead of electricity. It generates suction and discharge fluids using two flexible diaphragms that oscillate. Because of its construction, it can withstand a variety of liquids without leaking or breaking, including chemicals, slurries, and viscous materials. Because of its reputation for robustness, self-priming capability, and damage-free operation, AODD pumps are perfect for applications in wastewater treatment, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals.
Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps are highly reliable, self-priming, and capable of running dry without damage. Their chemical-resistant construction allows safe handling of abrasive and corrosive fluids, while air-powered operation ensures spark-free use in hazardous environments. With minimal moving parts, they offer low maintenance and cost-effective performance, making them ideal for industries like pharmaceuticals, food processing, and wastewater management.
Every fluid has its own characteristics. Pumping water requires a different method for pumping glue, an epoxy, tomato paste or an acid. Understanding the characteristics of the fluid is the first step towards choosing a suitable pump.
Are you feeding a pump or another machine? Are you potting, unloading a tank, moving fluid, or doing something else?
Pipe diameter must be as large as feasible because a double diaphragm pump delivers a lot of volume at low pressure. How much volume do you need for your application?
Are you creating suction height? How long are you planning to use the suction hoses? A significant factor is discharge length; the longer the discharge length, the greater the pressure losses you will encounter.
If your pump will be operating around the clock, you might need to switch to a lower cycle rate, which would require a larger pump and cost more. A lower cycle rate,
however, leads to less wear on the balls, seats, diaphragms, and packings, which lowers maintenance expenses.
A pump with ATEX approval can be necessary if it will be used in a hazardous area. ATEX certification ensures that equipment will perform safely in an explosive environment without causing an accident, if used as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
With a high-density fluid such as sulfuric acid, a heavier ball will be needed, such as one made from Viton® or PTFE. Viton® is more expensive than PTFE, but as it is more
dense and therefore heavier it will give a better suction. This is a key consideration for the sulfuric acid application with its 3-meter suction height. Santoprene® would not be a good option for this application as Santoprene is lighter than water. Balls made from Santoprene® will float on most fluids.
For a low cost, no ATEX solution:
● Husky 1050 polypropylene body + Santoprene®/Viton® inner parts
● Husky 1590 polypropylene body + Santoprene®/Viton® inner parts
For a low cost pump with ATEX approval:
● Husky 1050 conductive polypropylene body + Santoprene®/Viton® inner parts
For a high temperature pump, no ATEX approval:
● Husky 1050 PVDF body + PTFE inner parts
● Husky 1590 PVDF body + PTFE inner parts
For a high temperature pump with ATEX approval:
● Husky 1050 Hastelloy® body + polypropylene center section + PTFE inner parts
For a low cost chemical pump with no ATEX approval:
● Husky 15120 polypropylene center section + Santoprene® inner parts
● ChemSafe 1040 full PTFE body + PTFE diaphragm
● ChemSafe 1040 full polypropylene body + PTFE diaphragm
The air consumption of a double diaphragm pump is high. So don’t forget to add the cost of an air compressor into your calculations. Typically, a pump running continuously could easily consume 750-850 liters per minute. However, since these pumps typically operate intermittently, this is extremely rare in practice. You can get advice from your air compressor supplier on which air compressor is ideal for your particular application.
